Who We Are

We have a board of five honorary trustees, and a staff of two who manage the day to day operations of the trust.

Board Of Trustees

John Chatterton AM (Honorary Trustee and Chairman of the Board of Trustees)

John is now retired after a successful career spanning almost 40 years with Westpac Banking Corporation, where he held a number of senior executive roles up to Chief General Manager level.

In 1984, he joined the Board of the Royal Blind Society of NSW, and was appointed President in 1992, a position he held until his retirement from the RBS Board in 1999.

John joined the Board of Trustees of the Walter & Eliza Hall Trust in 1996, and was elected Chairman in 1997.

He now divides his time between Sydney and his vineyard in Mudgee, NSW.

Warwick Kent AO (Honorary Trustee)

Warwick was Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bank of Western Australia from 1989 to 1997, and prior to that a senior executive of Westpac Banking Corporation. He is currently Chairman of West Australian Newspapers Holdings Limited and Coventry Group Limited, and a non-executive director of Commonwealth Bank of Australia. He became a Trustee of the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust in early 2000.

Robert Minter (Honorary Trustee)

Robert is a solicitor. Prior to setting up his own practice he was a partner of Minter Ellison, Solicitors, a position he held for 30 years.

As a Trustee since 2000, he continues the Minter family’s dedicated involvement with the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust. His father, also Robert, was a Trustee.

He is CEO, First Asia Project Consulting, is a former President of Australia China Business Council and is a Member of the Australia China Council of the Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Robert lectures on topics relating to doing business in China, at various Universities.

John Cowper (Honorary Trustee)

John served as a Director of the Ambulance Service Board of New South Wales between 1990 and 1993 and was Federal President of the Advertising Institute of Australia between 1984 and 1990. John was the founding CEO of Cowper & Cowper Marketing Services in 1989.

He has held the positions of Marketing Director for both Barnardo’s Australia and the NSW Ambulance Service and he has worked with a number of Australia’s largest advertising agencies. John currently teaches Marketing subjects at Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE.

He joined the Board of Trustees of the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust in 2002.

The fifth Honorary Trustee position is currently vacant.

Staff

Lance Bauer (Trustee)

Lance was appointed Secretary in March 2003 following his retirement from Westpac Banking Corporation. His banking career with Bank of New South Wales and Westpac spanned 40 years and he held many senior and executive positions including Head of the Managing Director’s Office.

He was a trustee of the Buckland Fund, and was involved with its transformation and rebirth as the Westpac Foundation. He continued to be a trustee of the Foundation until his retirement from the Bank.

Helen Cook (Secretary/Manager)

Helen joined the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust in July 2003 following a career of 17 years with AMP. Helen managed the AMP Foundation’s grants program for five years, and has considerable experience in the areas of administration, events management and communication. She is passionate about assisting those who are disadvantaged in our community.
